How unlocking works
- Open an app you chose to pause. Instead of the app, you see the pause screen with a verse reference and its first few words, as a hint.
- Tap "Review a verse". A notification appears at the top of your screen in a few seconds. Tap it.
- Review the verse in Lift Your Eyes. It takes about half a minute: fill in a missing word, recall it from first letters, or say it from the reference alone, depending on how well you know it.
- Your apps open for a while. 15 minutes by default; you can choose 30 or 60 in Settings > Unlock time. Swipe right along the bottom edge of the screen to go back to the app you were using. When the time is up, your apps pause again on their own.
If you get a word wrong, that's fine: you'll see the whole verse, read it, and your apps still open. Tap "Not now" on the pause screen if you change your mind; it closes the app.
No notification? Check that notifications are on for Lift Your Eyes in iOS Settings > Notifications, and that your Focus allows time-sensitive notifications. If notifications are off, the pause screen says "Open Lift Your Eyes to unlock": open the app yourself and tap "Review a verse to unlock" on Home.
Emergency exit
If you need your phone right away, hold the emergency exit button for 10 seconds. It is at the bottom of Home and in Settings > Help. Every block turns off until the end of today's blocking window (midnight, in All day mode). You don't have to explain anything, and you can turn blocks back on whenever you like.
You can also remove Lift Your Eyes' access in iOS Settings > Screen Time, or delete the app. Either way, iOS removes the blocks.
Changing what is paused, and when
- Apps and websites: Settings > Blocked apps.
- Blocking window: Settings > Blocking window. All day, or a start and end time.
- Verse set and translation: Settings > Verse set, and the Translation choice at the top of Settings (King James Version or World English Bible).
Subscription
Lift Your Eyes starts with a free 7-day trial, then a yearly subscription. The current price is shown in the App Store and in the app before you subscribe.
- Manage or cancel: in the app, Settings > Manage subscription. Or in iOS Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions. If you cancel during the trial, you are not charged, and the app keeps working until the trial ends.
- Reminder: the app reminds you the day before your trial ends, if notifications are on.
- Restore purchases: on a new iPhone, or after reinstalling, tap "Restore purchases" in Settings or on the subscription screen. Use the same Apple Account you subscribed with.
- Refunds: Apple handles all payments and refunds. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.
- Family Sharing is not available for this subscription.
- When a subscription ends, your apps open as usual and nothing is paused. Your learned verses and settings stay on your iPhone, ready if you come back.
New iPhone or reinstalling
Your progress lives on your iPhone and is included in your iPhone backup, if you use one. Apple does not let apps carry Screen Time choices to another device, so on a new iPhone, or after reinstalling, choose your apps again in Settings > Blocked apps.
Privacy
No account, no ads, no tracking. Your verses, your progress and the apps you pause stay on your iPhone. Read the Privacy Policy.
